#58 – Collision

Hugs Bison shirts now available in the store!

The hugs bison has been long rumored to exist. It is said that he can not be directly observed. You have to stand in the right place, stretch out your arms, close your eyes and hold your breath. The hugs bison doesn’t shower so he smells really bad. Hold your breath!

….I don’t understand this one. I admit it. *confuzzled*

    1. The Higgs-Boson is a theoretical particle that the Large Hadron Collider was created in an attempt to verify.

    2. Chris says:

I thought it was adorable regardless. 🙂

The instant I saw the words Large Hadron Collider my memory clicked into place. And yes, it’s cute. XD

PS; with sciences I’m a very visual person; labels for them kinda fall by the wayside. I’m weird like that. *L*

    T-Shirt. Nao pls.

ZeoViolet: look up ‘higgs boson’ in google or something.

    1. ZeoViolet says:

Since I didn’t equate “higgs” with “hugs” bision why would that have occured to me? Someone above mentioned the Large Hadron Collider though and that was all I needed to understand. XD

    2. Stephen says:

I second this T-shirt request most adamantly.

I’m sharing this with all my physics dork friends!

    1. Chris says:

      Hooray!

Even my tribe wouldn’t eat such a friendly, comforting critter.

    Theoretically.

    1. Dan says:

That’s probably why they are so hard to find.

I think this is probably my favorite of your comics so far, it has made me laugh each time I’ve seen it the past 3 days.

Christopher, Hi,The higher the enegry of the collision, the higher the chance that it will produce heavier particles to appear (some of them, even though are created after the collision, do know really make themselves evident at the detectors). Many of those heavier particles are very unstable: they last as themselves just a small instance of time, and then decay into some other more stable particles. Many of these decay conversions involve pairs of particle-antiparticle. Most of these pairs (but not all) are charged particles, which means that on each pair, you will have a negative particle and its antiparticle, which will be a positive particle. The easiest way to see these charged pairs in the aftermath of the collision is by applying a very strong magnetic field that will clearly make the pairs evident, as two opposite curls that show up somewhere.Kind regards, Gastf3n

Then I reached into his mouth and found the cud particle.

Still making me laugh. My wife thinks I’m nuts.

      I think it’s adorable.

  9. This one is just adorable.

  10. Chester says:

This is something I believe we could all benefit from more research towards.

the hadron collider probably has the coolest name in all of science.
