If the contest was expired, chances are the cereal was too. The contests and giveaways on cereal boxes tend to last for about a year.

I despise nostalgia. I get really annoyed when I hear people going on about how much better it was back in the old days. I remember those days, and they sucked.

That being said, you're absolutely right. Cereal prizes are one of the few things that really were cooler "back in the day". That goes for Cracker Jack prizes, too. It's been a few years since I actually bought any Cracker Jacks, but the last few times I did, the prizes were totally lame. I'm pretty sure that once upon a time, they had stuff that was actually fun. Bring back better prizes, dang it!

The last really good thing i got from a box of cereal (aside from my daily dose of fiber) was a DVD with two episodes of Barney Miller.

Back in my day, there were cool toys like tops and toy cars in cereal. I remember once I got a Flintstones car that changed color in water (which sort of confused me, considering it never did that on TV, but regardless). These days you're lucky if you get a cheap plastic spoon or flimsy fabric Frisbee.

every time I ever bought cereal where you got to enter a contest or something, it had always expired, was very annoying, still happens actually. Don't remember ever seeing one with toys inside though..
