#95 – Breathe

Fish tank water tastes horrible. When you have a fish bowl it’s easy to scoop out the fish and then just carry the bowl over to the sink or toilet to dump it out. If you need to empty a tank you have to do something else. You can get a cup and scoop out the water for the next hour or be a smarty pants that know how to siphon things… except give it a second for the water to come out before giving up and putting the hose back in your mouth.

That’s what ‘rabbit pumps’ are for. A hose inside a drum, with a roller attached to a crank to squeeze it. When you back off, the roller relaxes and the siphon keeps going; fish tank, gasoline, etc. (but not at the same time!)

If you fill the hose with water first, just from your tap, you don’t need to use your mouth. Just make sure it’s completely full, and put one end in the tank, and the other wherever you want it to drain (the place you drain to has to be lower than the tank). I learned that little trick working in a lab, because I definitely don’t want to get gross lab water from the sonicator in my mouth!

I used to have a Beta, and every couple of weeks, I’d do a complete change of water in his tank. He’d have to hang out in a small glass pickle jar in the meantime. Even though your typical Siamese Fighting Fish is a bit cranky anyway, my fish always sulked during the wait. He didn’t like looking like a pickle I guess.
