I used to have a Beta, and every couple of weeks, I'd do a complete change of water in his tank. He'd have to hang out in a small glass pickle jar in the meantime. Even though your typical Siamese Fighting Fish is a bit cranky anyway, my fish always sulked during the wait. He didn't like looking like a pickle I guess.

If you fill the hose with water first, just from your tap, you don't need to use your mouth. Just make sure it's completely full, and put one end in the tank, and the other wherever you want it to drain (the place you drain to has to be lower than the tank). I learned that little trick working in a lab, because I definitely don't want to get gross lab water from the sonicator in my mouth!

That's what 'rabbit pumps' are for. A hose inside a drum, with a roller attached to a crank to squeeze it. When you back off, the roller relaxes and the siphon keeps going; fish tank, gasoline, etc. (but not at the same time!)
