#43 – Flung

I’m still hoping for a space elevator. That seems like the least frightening way to get off the planet. I imagine you may even be able to enjoy a light lunch while sitting in your window seat enjoying the view. It would be a really extreme version of a revolving rooftop restaurant.

There probably be will be a revolving restaurant at about the halfway point, depending on how fast the lift goes.

If Sir Arthur (C. Clarke) had it right (and he was good at this stuff, as inventor of the geosync comsat in 1945), it would take hours at any reasonable speed of rise, maybe all day (don’t recall for sure, been a while), but look up “The Fountains of Paradise”, AND (thanks, Google!) there’s a new journal at http://www.spaceelevator.com. Don’t forget Tsiolkovsky and Antonusov’s papers (in Russian.)
The restaurant may as well be _in_ the lift, and keep going, but there may be stations at interesting altitudes for science operations.

Woops — that’s [Yuri Artsutanov] (photo on page iv of CLIMB, Vol.1 No.1, the new journal). Still looking… It’ll cost a lot to build, but it’s looking like it’s closer than ever, and a conference is coming up in August.

Could this be a secret guest appearance of Biff? I’m certain he’s worn a very similar suit before…
