#89 – Parenting

It’s amazing to be there seeing your child experience new things and concepts for the first time. It’s funny how there’s a lot of hype over having to tell your kids about stuff like “the birds and the bees” or the death of a pet. In reality there are thousands of concepts like that you get to introduce. A few weeks ago we were talking and he asked “What is the future?” That question triggered so many things in my head that I just sat there and stared into his eyes overwhelmed with the contrast between the information inside me and his anticipation in hearing it.
Also, Look! It’s Biff’s 6th birthday! Woo! To celebrate all Biff books are just $6!

Oh man – that reminds me of some of the kids I get in the bookshop. Yesterday a little boy kept asking me ‘why?’ and at some point I got so confused I just stared at him. He did stop asking questions, though. I imagine being a parent is like that, except all the time.
So wait, Biff started on my birthday?
I did not realize this. O.o
From this day forward, he had a fear of The Unknown Comic.
My favorite question, on the walk to school one morning in third grade, was, “If everything has gravity, does gravity have gravity?”
I interpreted this as asking whether gravitons have mass. Fortunately, by this point my son was perfectly willing to accept “I don’t know” as an answer.
My daughter is starting a “why?” phase, but at this point (she’s only 3), if I get stuck on a question, I can just give a long, boring, scientific explanation which usually leads to her playing with her toys and forgetting what the conversation was about. Glad I paid attention in physics and biology (let’s hope she doesn’t go the chemistry rout, or I’m screwed).
Q: “What is the future?”
A: “I’ll tell you later.”

“What’s the future?” (smack) “well son, we were in the past, now we are in the present, and the future is bound to repeat itself.
