#102 – Observed

I remember being confused more than sad. There was a lot of standing around in rooms with adults in suits talking and seemingly having a good time. I just tried to be polite and stood where I was told to stand and sat where I was told to sit.

I’ve never had any experience like that, I’m almost 22 years old now and have never been to a funeral. 5 uncles, 5 aunts, innumerable cousins, 4 grandparents, all of them still alive. I’ve even got great uncles and aunts. Though my last great grandparent did die a couple years ago, think she was 97, it would seem I’ve got a rather long-lived family. God willing, I won’t have to attend a funeral for at least another 22 years.

Don’t forget watching you go to the bathroom.

I’ve said it before, but it still must be said.
Crying for the living. Laughing for the dead.
I’ve been to three funerals, and the funeral itself is never the sad part for me. The funeral is always fun with so many friends and family members together. It’s months later when I think of Grandma’s home made bread, or I play poker and Grandpa isn’t there to beat everyone. That’s when I cry. Not when we are all there to remember the best of things. When it’s just me or just a few of us, and we remember what we’ll never have again.
I never feel sorry for the dead. I feel sorry for the living that go on without such great people.
