#241 – Classed

I seem to remember the phrase “not living up to his potential” coming up a lot in my schooling. I guess there is some sort of crystal ball or time travel device they had access to? “Christopher doesn’t pay attention very well in class but the bones of the ancients tell us this is to be expected.”

I found out in physics class, to reach your full potential, you have to be blasted out into deep space. But I realized, what are you doing to do with it out there?

My school was notorious for not helping students realize potential. And one teacher even had a nervous breakdown a couple of years after I graduated. All of us kids knew he was about to realize his potential to get all crazy-go-nuts.

A case can be made for (at least American) high schools (years 9-12) having their primary goal to frustrate potentials. “You’re terrible at that, you’ll never get any better” should be firing words, but instead, they’re too common.
And of course, teaching what to think, instead of how to think, which has left our graduating classes open to amazingly inane propaganda.
