#28 – Twist

When I was a kid I was terrified of balloons popping unexpectedly. Drove me nuts. It made balloon twisters fascinating and nerve wracking at the same time. My adrenaline would shoot through the roof while the balloons folded and squeaked into new shapes. When I would finally be handed my bubbly animal approximation I was filled with excitement and relief.

When you said ‘balloon twisters’, I got a completely different image in my head.

So was I! There was a popular TV show for very young kids here that featured a segment where a balloon was popped, and I couldn’t watch it. So I guess I was even afraid of balloons popping expectedly.

There used to be a game called, “Don’t Blow Your Top!” that spazzed me out mightily. You blew up a balloon, and placed it in a cylindrical holder shaped like a angry-looking little man. Then you put a top hat thing on top. Kids took turns putting marbles in the top hat, until it got heavy enough to press a spike onto the balloon hard enough to pop it. Anticipation nearly killed me every time.

I have never had a balloon that i didn’t just suck the helium out of to make my voice sound funny.

I have that so much. I hate going to kids birthday parties because of this.
