Dogs are like that. I remember one comedian once saying he would just hide in a closet for a couple of minutes, then step out just to see his dog get all happy to see him again.

To be fair: To a canine, being left alone feels like being expelled out of the pack (the worst sentence imaginable). And coming back feels like being pardoned.
