#405 – Trench

I’m guessing this was a super pain in the neck for anyone that had responsibilities or places to go. But for kids? Snow that was deeper than you were tall? Amazing.

I dig a path for my terrier in the winter and we’ve had a few years where it gets really high over her head and all I can think of is the trench run. I’ve considered recording her and adding the sound effects.

Back in the 70s, we were living in Oakland, Ca. We would come back to Oklahoma for Christmas to be with relatives, and we loved seeing the snow every year. My mother once told me that I was about four years old when I first saw snow, and ran out the door, still in my PJs, and just flew off the porch and straight into a snowdrift. Now, as an adult, I grouch about putting on the big boots to slog around outside, or having to go anywhere in the cold and slush. *sigh*

As a child growing up in Maine, never saw a snowfall that was taller than me. However, the snowplow piles that increased in height with the driveway shovelings would sometime be turned into awesomely large mounds that were taller than us kids. We would sometimes turn these into snow forts and caves or tunnels.
