At least, until the cashier still has to card you for it.
    That’s the worst.

I’m glad I don’t live in a state that cards me when I buy my flaming butt…um, butter. Yeah, flaming butter, that’s exactly what I was going to say.

The Wal-Mart in our area was one of the first to try a self checkout, and the machines that they used yelled out the name of whatever product you scanned very loudly, and sometimes embarrassingly. And not always embarrassing because of what you were buying, but because it would mis-pronounce things in the wrong direction. The machines were removed in favour of the under-15-items lane.

My local grocery store self-checkout was decent until they completely changed the software the computers were running. And then later they changed the brought-from-home bag credit question to “how many bags did you buy” because plastic bags now cost 5 cents… and there’s no more credit for bringing your own. Aaand the latest change? You don’t see the store discount price on things for using their card until you hit “Finish and Pay.” So you sit there thinking, “Wasn’t this on sale? Okay I guess I’ll just get one,” and then see the discount *after* and have to hope it was actually on that item as you hit “Scan more items” and run another one through the system.

I seriously don’t know what happened to “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
