I will eat slices of ham and cheese directly out of the refrigerator for lunch. Don’t think I haven’t thought this through!
A few times in my childhood I decided to take a chance and sample some of my mom’s cereal. “Ahh! Ugh! What?! How can anyone eat a bowl of this? I can’t even eat one spoonful!” Then I would wait 18 months or so and do it again.
I hated the “You have to finish the box that’s already open!” rule.
“But mom, I hate that old cereal now! It tastes horrible! I can’t even look at that dang rabbit without feeling nauseous!”
My entire childhood was filled with eating cereal for breakfast. Then somewhere along the line I started having more adult items like bagels or just some caffeine. Now when I eat cereal it feels like an indulgent treat. “Look! The milk turned into chocolate milk!”
I’m old enough to remember when the prizes in cereal boxes were actually in the bag of cereal. I would open the new box and pour half of the cereal out into a big soup bowl. Then I would reach my entire kid arm into the bag and dig around looking for the toy. I can still hear the crunching sounds of the cereal like walking on freshly fallen snow.
At least I can usually remember what cereal I am looking for. There are some things though that I only buy occasionally and it turns out I don’t know what they are with much precision.
“Hmm… where’s the spaghetti sauce with the blue label and the onions? They are all green now… is this even the right brand? Is this the shampoo aisle?”
No matter how many times we feed our dog that little bowl full of crunchy bits she enjoys it just the same. She actually seems to enjoy all food equally. She chews on grass out in the yard with the same enthusiasm as if she snagged a bit of steak that fell on the floor.
“Collect all 8!” I would squeeze and shake those boxes and still have no idea if I would be getting the cool jet car toy in the big picture on the box or my 5th garbage truck. Too many garbage trucks! I suppose now you just buy the first box of cereal and then get the complete set of toys off eBay.
