We really have a toy that yells out “Play with me!” Nice guilt trip we are trying to put on our kid there.
I have a bunch of toys from years ago that I “collected”. I was single and had money for that kind of stuff. I would look at them, maybe put them on a shelf. Eventually they would wind up in a box. Now I get to dig those things out of boxes and actually play with them. It’s a great feeling.
“Listen to me. You need to stop poking the dog with your race car or there will be consequences! For both of us!”
“What is he doing? That’s not right! You have to hold the rattle down here on the handle. It’s too muffled if you grip it at the bulb! Everyone knows this!”
I’m old enough to remember when the prizes in cereal boxes were actually in the bag of cereal. I would open the new box and pour half of the cereal out into a big soup bowl. Then I would reach my entire kid arm into the bag and dig around looking for the toy. I can still hear the crunching sounds of the cereal like walking on freshly fallen snow.
After our second child was born we dug out some old toys out of storage from our first son. I was tickled that 5 years later I knew all the sequences of the toys as if they were albums I loved but hadn’t listened to since college. “Oh yes, this is Pop Goes the Weasel followed by London Bridge, Twinkle Twinkle, This Old Man and finally 3 Blind Mice. Classic.”
Especially when it’s a few rooms away. An adorable cartoon character voice suddenly becomes a burglar talking to his buddy. The race car with the built-in crash sound becomes your door being pried open.
