#304 – Swell

I’m starting to wonder if my cat allergies have started to subside. It’s been a few years since my last attack but I still go over to houses with cats in them. Maybe I should pet one for awhile and then rub my eyes really hard. As long as I have a backup driver to get me home.

Sounds like you have a meta-allergy

Just rub your eyes with the cat, cut out the middleman.

  3. Are you sure you’re allergic to cats, and not to their litter? I thought at one point that I was developing a cat allergy (and was devastated about it, because I love kitties and have always had them), only to realize that it was the clay litter that was causing me problems. Turns out a lot of people are allergic to the clay kind of litter, and it’s going out of fashion now because there are a lot of other options available (I use one that’s made from ground-up corn cobs and is flushable). If the houses where you’re visiting cats are clay-litter-free, that might be the culprit.

      Hmm! I’ll look into that!

Well, it is perhaps different with different allergies, but my wife once asked if there was a cure for bee allergies. Apparently, there is a procedure where you can, with a medical team standing by, be repeatedly stung by a bee until your body stops being allergic to it. So at least for bee allergies, rapid repeat exposure will actually cure it (in some cases, warned the doctor). So maybe this is also the case with cat allergies, and you had a bunch of exposure in a short enough time.

Have you ever tried to get a cat to sting you?

      1. Justin says:

Not tried, but I assure you; they are quite capable of stinging…

Okay, that’s weird, I always thought it worked the other way with bee stings. That is, more exposure actually made people more sensitive, to the point of possibly fatal anaphalactic shock.
Lucky me, I haven’t been stung in years. The last time though, I took one right on the bridge of my nose. I was effectively blind for a day, since both my eyes swelled shut.

It may depend how severe the allergy is. Lesser allergies can be eliminated by exposure, severe allergies that can be life threatening can not.
