#357 – Phantoms

For me it’s cats. I see lots of cats slinking around in my peripheral vision. They are never there when I look directly at them. It used to freak me out but now it’s common enough that I just think “Hey cool, another cat phantom.”

I’m alarmed that this happens to you when you are merely “tired” and not after days of sleep deprivation.

But hey, my brain mixes up entire phrases, like “tired” for “really sleepy”, so I guess, whatever.

Also bear in mind that the author has small children, which can easily result in days of sleep deprivation…

The only serious hallucination I’ve ever had was when late at night I hallucinated a brightly lit house in the forest behind my own house. In front of the house were two people launching fireworks that were falling down in front of the trees, which I could hear as well as see. I got closer and I could see more details, but I didnt want to go out and actually meet them so I went back to sleep. In reality there’s nothing in that direction for at least a mile, but it was so realistic that I didn’t even realize it was a hallucination until the next morning.

I still highly recommend “Fever Floyd,” where you wait until you are really ill with the Flu or similar, and after you dose up on your heavy-duty medicinals of choice, put The Wall on your player on repeat. That is the closest I ever got to any kind of bad trip, since I don’t do drugs. But, anyone I described it to told me that was the most awesome thing they ever heard.

I know! It used to be dancing tuna.

  7. Tired or not, I tend to see people on the side of the road where there aren’t actually people. Hallucinations or spirits? Who even knows.

This reminded me of TNG ‘Timescape’, where Picard laughed at having drawn a smiley face in the steam of the exploding warp core.
