#60 – Swallow

My wife used to be a volunteer at the children’s section of the zoo. One of her favorite parts was showing kids various animals that they could have as pets. The rats and guinea pigs didn’t have any official names. If the kids asked what their names were the volunteer would just make one up. It was usually something food based like “Oreo” or “Peanut Butter” because in reality they were food for other animals at the zoo.

I must be evil. When I was a home security installer, one of my customers was an Korean family. They had just gotten a cat and a dog as a pet. I jokingly called them “Lunch” and “Dinner”. The Korean family liked the joke so much they kept the names.

When my Dad was a kid, he named a dog the Choctaw word for “meat”, which I have since forgot, much less have been able to spell.

Also, we had a pet rat once, she was a really cool critter. We would open her cage, and she would spend some time exploring the house, then climb up her table, get in the cage, and pull her door closed. Nobody taught her to do that last part.

Obviously, she didn’t want unwanted vermin loose in her cage.
